Youth Climate Corps BC (YCCBC) is excited to announce our presence at the upcoming Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) conference, September 16 - 20 at the Vancouver Convention Center! Our team, including Ben Simoni, Abbey Piazza, and dedicated allies, will be on hand with yellow buttons "Ask me about Youth Climate Corps BC", you won't miss it! Be sure to seek us out and learn more about our initiatives!
We are looking forward to seeing you there to engage in meaningful discussions about the climate challenges we face and explore innovative solutions with elected officials. Our goal is to foster dialogue on how we can better serve the youth community and tackle climate issues effectively.
We are also thrilled to be part of a special clinic at UBCM:
Youth Voices: Catalyzing Climate Action and Policy Reform
Date: September 17, 2024
Time: 7:30 AM – 8:30 AM
Location: Room 1, VCC
Speakers: Ben Simoni (Youth Climate Corps BC), Rik Logtenberg (City of Nelson, Councillor), Ian Picketts (District of Squamish, staff), Miley Leong (CityHive), Patrice Tai-Clair(Youthful Cities)
Description:
Youth are at the forefront of addressing today’s most pressing issues, including climate change, housing affordability, and the opioid crisis. Yet, they are often excluded from key decision-making processes and long-term planning. This session will explore how local governments can leverage the creativity and energy of young people to tackle these complex challenges.
Join us for an insightful discussion with local government staff, elected officials, and young leaders who are driving youth engagement and mobilization. Panelists will share strategies for developing and implementing local solutions that address climate action while minimizing financial and capacity burdens for local governments. The conversation will focus on ensuring that youth voices are heard and integrated into effective local policies.
Additionally, the City of Port Moody, the City of Nelson, and the Association of Kootenay & Boundary Local Governments have submitted a resolution to UBCM, which is currently in the endorsed block and set for a vote on Wednesday. The resolution is E55, “Youth Climate Corps” and urges the provincial government to invest in a large-scale, BC-wide Youth Climate Corps. We are eagerly anticipating the outcome, as this resolution will bolster our advocacy for a large-scale Youth Climate Corps in BC. This development complements the recent endorsement we received from the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF). Their alignment with our priorities underscores our collective commitment to tackling climate challenges and advancing youth-led initiatives.
Stay tuned for more updates, and we look forward to connecting with you at UBCM!
