YOUTH CLIMATE CORPS BC - SQUAMISH

Empowering Youth for a Better Future

Located in Southwest British Columbia, Squamish is a community deeply connected to its natural environment. From its culture to its economy, the future of this district is deeply impacted by the climate crisis. The presence of Youth Climate Corps BC in Squamish seeks to promote climate resiliency in the community and ensure a brighter future for those who call Squamish home.

YCCBC Squamish - 2025 Season

The Squamish Youth Climate Corps team has had an active and inspiring season so far, working alongside the District of Squamish and local partners to support climate action and community resilience. The season began with a cultural land orientation from Talaysay Tours, followed by a series of trainings focused on respectful workplace practices, team building, and public engagement through an equity and inclusion lens.

The team has contributed to zero waste events like the Kids' Clothing & Book Swap and the Re-Use It Fair, and gained insight into local waste systems through a landfill tour. They’ve supported active transportation initiatives during Go by Bike Week, including hosting free tune-up stations and supporting the facilitation of a community bike repair workshop. Other hands-on contributions include native species planting in the Squamish Estuary with Squamish River Watershed Society, supporting the setup of Squamish ReBuild’s new storefront, and conducting FireSmart outreach in evacuation alert zones.

Collaborations with Squamish CAN have included supporting their downtown farm and preparing for residential recycling tote audits, while the team has also worked directly with the District on waste audits at municipal buildings. Looking ahead, they’ll help deliver climate education at District summer camps, assist with drought monitoring and website updates for the Squamish Streamkeepers, and participate in home energy retrofits and air sealing workshops in partnership with Retrofit Assist and the District. With a full summer still ahead, there are many more exciting projects to come.

Within Youth Climate Corps, crew members are between 17-30 years old; they earn wages, gain work experience, build networks, and develop themselves personally and professionally. Meanwhile, they complete projects that both benefit their own communities and support global efforts to act on the climate crisis.

If you or your organization wants to learn more about how to team up with us and move forward on projects in your community, or if you are interested in funding one of our projects related to our different focus areas, we are here to support you.

We are committed to maintaining and growing respectful relationships in every region where we work.

YCCBC recognizes that colonization has deeply disrupted Indigenous Peoples’ relationships with their lands, communities, and cultural practices. We understand that the climate crisis is rooted in ongoing systems of colonialism and resource extraction—systems that became possible through the dispossession of Indigenous Peoples from their homelands.

We believe that Indigenous sovereignty is essential to building just futures and liveable worlds. YCCBC is committed to listening, learning, and walking in solidarity with Indigenous communities and to supporting Indigenous-led climate action across the province.

ABOUT US

Youth Climate Corps BC develops the climate leaders of tomorrow by training a workforce of young people who know how to work together, communicate powerfully, and get things done on projects that contribute to climate resilience in communities across British Columbia.
