Simryn Dhensaw
Based on the traditional and unceded territories of the xwməθkwəy̓ əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, Simryn (she/her) is a Climate Action Technician with the 2024-2025 YCCBC Vancouver Crew.
Story
Simryn Dhensaw (she /her) is a current climate action technician at YCCBC with the
Vancouver cohort. She is a recent graduate from the University of Edinburgh with a Master
of Science in Marine Systems and Policies (2023). Here, her research focused on the Scottish
aquaculture industry, its impact on the marine environment, and the policies that govern its
conduct and use. Within her Master’s thesis, she advocated for the imposition of a
mandated fallowing period for aquaculture operations in Scotland to allow the benthic
ecosystem below farming operations adequate time to recover from the adverse
environmental inputs associated with production. Before this, Simryn attended the
University of British Columbia (UBC), where she studied Political Science with a
concentration in environmental policy.
As Simryn has grown up in Vancouver, she enjoys connecting with the natural environment
and different aspects of the community. Through her work at YCC she has been able to gain
hands-on experience working on ecological restoration, has assisted in bicycling skills
instruction alongside HUB Cycling, and is working on the relaunch of our Climate Friendly
Homes Program. Simryn aspires to work in environmental policy, safeguarding our natural
environments for the enjoyment of future generations. She is passionate about climate
action, the management of marine ecosystems and resources, as well as the inclusion of
diversity within decision-making spheres. Outside of YCC, Simryn enjoys scuba diving, hiking,
spending time with her dog outdoors, and skiing.
